6 lawn care hacks to save you time and money

5 Lawn Care Hacks To Save You Time And Money. Unless you’re Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk or Bruce Wayne, there’s a pretty big chance you wouldn’t mind saving a few bucks when it comes to your lawn; money that could then be put toward more useful stuff. That’s where we’ve got you covered.

From making DIY weed killers to raiding the cupboard under your sink for affordable alternatives to specialist stuff. Making the most out of your lawn’s superpowers to knowing when to ask for help, we’ve pulled together a list of money-slash-time saving hacks that will help you create a lawn that thrives all-year-round. Enjoy.

Weeds Hate Vinegar

It’s not that we hate weeds, it’s just that… no… scrap that… we hate weeds. That’s where salt and vinegar come in. Not just our third favourite flavour of crisps (Chilli Heatwave Doritos are just unbeatable, followed closely by Paprika Pringles), salt and vinegar are ace at dealing with weeds too.

Simply mix a cup of salt with roughly four-and-a-half litres of white vinegar and a tablespoon of dish soap and, voila, you have a money-saving, weed-killing solution. A solution that’s ready to take down those invaders in your lawn. All you have to do is coat your weeds thoroughly and then leave the vinegar to do its thing. Just try not to spray the lawn itself, as that can stop any grass growing back for a while.

The other method you could try is covering your weeds with rock salt, which will kill your weeds (and prevent them growing back in the future) within 10 days.

Use Your Clippings As Fertiliser

Proper fertiliser is obviously great for growing green green grass. But if you’re looking for an organic alternative that’s going to keep a few pennies in your pocket, the answer is simple: stop collecting your grass clippings after you mow. Not only will this save you a chore, it’s also a super-easy way to fertilise your lawn. The reason for this is, as those uncollected clippings decompose, they actually turn into nutrients that your lawn can’t get enough of. And the same goes for leaves, which also make a great fertiliser come autumn.

Of course, mulching your clippings back into your soil doesn’t mean you can stop fertilising your lawn altogether, but it does mean a lot less fertilising. Do this with caution as this method can also add to your thatch levels.

Create A Compost Pile

Start a compost pile. Start a compost pile. And start a compost pile. Seriously, do it. And not just because it’s fun finding out what weird stuff can actually be composted, but because composting is one of the best ways to create nutrient rich soil without your bank manager having to worry about your spending.

Start with organic leftovers from your kitchen, garden waste and the grass collected by your mower, and then throw it all into a compost bin where it’ll start doing its thing while you watch your lawn care costs go down and down. Oh and, in case you didn’t already know, spreading a light layer of compost over your grass is a surefire way to keep your lawn happy.

Sharpen Your Mower Blades

If time is money, then this hack is going to help you save big. Umm, you can put that eye roll away because we mean it. Sure, it might mean adding one more thing to your immediate to-do list, but once you’ve sharpened your mower blades, you’re going to start saving a whole lot of time come mowing day.

For starters, you won’t need to make multiple passes while mowing your lawn because, well, your blades are going to slice that grass like a samurai sword slicing through olive spread. But the other hidden benefit is this: the sharper your blades, the cleaner your cut, meaning you’ll reduce the chances of any lawn disease taking hold. It’s basically the super-quick investment that will have you smiling all mowing season.
